Upgrading to "Pay As You Go" removes referral bonuses?

My project using Convex was getting close to our 6 GB file bandwidth limit. None of our other usages were even close to hitting their limit. We decided to switch to a pay-as-you-go account to address this. Once we upgraded, Convex informed us that our referral bonuses would not be used.
Why is this the case? Is there any way to get these boosts applied? It seems to me like this incentivizes downgrading to the free tier as soon as our initial launch activity decreases to get those referral bonuses back.
