Hello all, for Cursor.com, do you all typically
A) pay for Cursor's monthly subscription? (which presumably has usage limits)
or
B) set your own (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) API key in the Cursor settings?

Some in the Cursor forum say the subscription is cheaper: https://forum.cursor.com/t/cursor-subscription-or-openai-api/107

Cursor subscription or openai api?
What is the advantage of paying for the course subscription instead of paying for the openai api?
I use cody+chatgpt...never hit the limit,,,and i use it everyday,,,Cody suggest me code while I type...chatgpt for conversions about code... 20 usd a month...
Yes I currently use Cody and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. But many in our community are recommending Cursor so I am wondering how to best use/evaluate Cursor
I pay the subscription and have used heavily for a couple weeks now. Haven't hit any limits but I think there's a monthly one I may eventually run into. No problems so far though.
Ready to get an Anthropic key if I do hit one though
i have 4 work emails. so i'm on my 4th trial in last 2 months 😂
buying the subscription right after this month ends.
Haha. Wow you would push through this friction over using Cody. Interesting signal
I pay the subscription for it and tend to hit the 500 request limit at the end of the billing month
do note that when you hit the limit they still let you use the "pro" models but there might be a queue to wait
Oh it’s 500 hit limit. How long does it typically take to get through the queue?
it depends on the time of the day, could be 2 to 60 seconds
i love it yeah. 😉
500 premium request limit is for using models gpt4, 4o and claude sonnet
for me i have used these chats within a week and queue has been great for me always pass through the queue in like 2-5 seconds. never had to wait longer
Hmm good to know.
I wonder if the forking of VS code gives Cursor this structural advantage over Cody, which is an extension.
Cody now also has composing, but perhaps the full blown fork gives Cursor the speed of development advantage
I think that I've never experienced a better UX in any product than Cursor, seriously recommend it and I'm not affiliated
I've just been using the subscription
works ok until you run out of fast requests
Looks like I'll likely run out of fast requests in the next 48 hours, will update
hey Cody, hope you doing good. your channel's subscriber here! you made a video about cursor "composer" little while ago. that was kinda my introduction to cursor composer. and you didn't mention that it was a beta feature. took me whole hour to find that out.😂
sometime i rely on your videos to find things out. please don't do that again! thanks
fwiw we should all consider AI itself, as a whole, to be in beta
i was literally uninstalling and installing cursor again because shift+command+I was not working and for god sake i was pissed 😂
ooohh haha that way, gotcha
I’m also curious as to what happens after the 500 Limit. Please do update
it might just be a little buggy 😆
but I use it daily, so it's good imo
I think his main complaint is he didn't know to turn on beta features, so he couldn't figure out how to use it
After running out of the 500 fast premium requests for Claude, it quietly switched to 01-mini, unprompted. 01-mini does not stream, so you're waiting a good amount of time before everything shows up. It doesn't converse like Claude, it just changes stuff and gives an outline of the changes. And it's as dumb as a box of rocks compared to Claude.
(Which is expected, to be fair.)
Claude so far only has a slight pause, which it indicates in text, but it's brief. So far no real impact from going to slow requests.
Today's Cursor update allows composer to move to the left pane, where it should have been in the first place. So much better.
Appreciate the update
One more: been using a lot past the limit, it has made no discernible difference.
Did you add Tom redman’s scripts? Any customization?
No I didn't. I have some instructions in the settings that it may or may not be following very well lol. Mileage varies. Just using Claude in the composer window. I will say that I'm cooling on this quite a bit as a realistic tool for authoring software. Just really tough to keep quality up as the app gets past non-trivial.
Update: slow requests are slowing down a bit. Just got this:

Looks like you can add 500 more fast requests for $20 per month a pop. But it also started working again, hopefully can avoid that.
