Convex and Startups
Hey, is Convex affordable in long term for a startup? It seems too good to be true I guess.
Would it cause financial collapse eventually or is it pretty fine?
I guess total AWS', realtime features etc. would cost similar to it anyways, correct?

Hey there. Yep, most of our customers are startups. In general, when you're building your product (before adoption), the vast majority of teams are just paying for Pro with the built-in resources. So $25/$50 a month etc.
Once you start getting adoption, there is consumption pricing that does okay right now, but we're introducing a plan soon with more e.g. volume discounts for our busier/larger customers
happy to answer any specific questions about pricing or startups if you have more
Would there be instant and high price increases, some said what if provider increase prices by 50%? It is better to be safe than sorry when it is time to scaling haha.
Since I wouldn't plan to change from Convex, I don't mind vendor lock-in as long as it is sustainable and keeps business profitable so that is why I'm asking. Thank you so much for your answer.
yeah, I mean a lot of this is ultimately about building a relationship with us and us earning your trust that we're in this for the long haul and not about baiting and switching, etc.
but these questions are super fair
I will say that word spreads fast, and what's best for us is that developers love convex and feel safe and thilled about long term relationships with our team and platform
if we started doing pricing hijinx and bait-and-switch, we probably wouldn't last long!
so, we tend to have a very AWS-esque mentality about pricing and customer relationships. most of the time we spend with developers talking about their projects at scale often ends up with them having more efficient sites and therefore a lower bill. this is because it's much more valuable for us to keep you as a customer and have you all feel excited to tell others about us than to get 20% more revenue (or even 50% more) on your next bill by jacking up your rates after you're committed
That's lovely to hear! I'll definitely use Convex, thanks a lot.
